Breaking ground: 50 million euros for new STILL mechatronics centre in Hamburg

STILL invests in Hamburg headquarters

The Hamburg-based intralogistics expert STILL and Mercurius Industrial Properties GmbH (Frankfurt am Main) today officially broke ground for the STILL "Centre of Competence Mechatronics" in Hamburg. The two companies are thus demonstrating their commitment to the long-term strengthening of the location and its innovative power. STILL is also announcing further site developments in Hamburg: The company intends to strengthen its position in the field of energy systems and to manufacture its own lithium-ion batteries in Hamburg from 2026.

The new STILL Center of Competence Mechatronics in Hamburg Billbrook is scheduled for completion in early 2026. STILL and Mercurius Industrial Properties are investing around 50 million euros in the state-of-the-art building, which will comprise 10,800 square meters of production space, testing and development areas and offices for STILL Mechatronics.

Together with Hamburg's Senator for Economics and Innovation, Dr Melanie Leonhard, STILL and Mercurius today opened the construction phase of the new STILL Mechatronics Centre in Hamburg Billbrook. The state-of-the-art building is being constructed on an area of 14,500 m² and comprises 8,200 m² of production space and 2,600 m² of office space. It will be home to around 140 employees. The total cost of the land, construction, production facilities and equipment is around 50 million euros. The ambitious construction project is scheduled for completion in early 2026, with the move expected to take place in the summer of 2026.

New centre for innovation strength and production capacities

With the new building, STILL is significantly increasing the space available for mechatronics from the current 5,900 m² to 10,800 m². STILL is thus responding to the successful development of mechatronics within the company and laying the foundations for further growth and the continuous expansion of its mechatronics portfolio. In addition, the new centre of competence will enable different teams and skills to be brought together, thus promoting interdisciplinary cooperation, innovation and efficiency. In addition to production lines, the new premises provide ample space for test areas and development laboratories. The new location is only one kilometre from STILL's headquarters, where the previous mechatronics centre is located. The space that will become available there has already been allocated as part of the site development programme and will facilitate, among other things, the expansion of the STILL training workshop.

"With our Centre of Competence Mechatronics, we are creating a unique innovation platform for the entire mechatronics sector," says STILL Managing Director Dr Florian Heydenreich. "It stands for innovative strength, technological excellence and efficiency - and for highly attractive, future-proof jobs in Hamburg."

A strong commitment to the Hamburg site

The ambitious building project and the strengthening of the mechatronics competence in Hamburg underline the great importance of the location for the company. "Hamburg is and will remain not only STILL's headquarters, but also an important innovation centre," emphasises Dr Heydenreich. For the coming year, STILL is already planning further investments in Hamburg and the development of the location into a competence centre for energy. To this end, the company is expanding its production in the field of innovative drive systems and plans to produce its own lithium-ion batteries in the Hanseatic city from 2026.

"Following the opening of our production facility for fuel cell systems in 2023, the next logical step is to build up further expertise and pool resources in the field of pioneering energy systems," explains Dr Heydenreich. "In addition, lithium-ion technology is one of the most important energy systems of the future. We are making an important contribution to this development by setting up our own lithium-ion battery production."
